The Students for Brown Coalition is made up of a diverse group of people who are working to further their education in an increasingly challenging economy and competitive world. We realize that as the next generation of leaders, we have a key role in tackling the problems of tomorrow. Senator Brown has made jobs and the economy his top priority. And we believe that he has the vision and energy to get our nation’s economy back on track and serve as a leader we are proud to stand with.
RELATED LEGISLATION
STUDENT LOAN INTEREST RATES: Recognizing that many students in need of federal student loans cannot afford to go to college without low interest student loans, Brown introduced a bill that would extend the subsidized Stafford student loan interest rate of 3.4% for one year. While both parties introduced bills with controversial ways to pay for the extension, Brown was the first Senator to introduce a bill with a noncontroversial way to pay for it. The subsidized Stafford loan interest rates were extended for one year along with the Surface Transportation Reauthorization. Subsidized Stafford Loan Reduced Interest Rate Extension Act of 2012 (S. 2834).
INCREASED TRANSPARENCY IN HIGHER EDUCATION: With news of outrageous professor and administrator compensation packages at a time when the cost of college continues to rise, Brown sought to increase transparency in higher education. Brown introduced a measure to require all nonprofit higher education that receives federal assistance to post its tax return on the institution’s website so that parents and students can see how their schools are spending their tuition dollars. A Bill to Require Institutions of Higher Education to Post Certain IRS Returns on their Websites (S. 2835).
SUPPORTING RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION: Senator Brown recognizes that students struggle to afford the rising cost of college and worked to preserve Pell Grant funding. Recognizing that the Commonwealth’s colleges and universities are some of the top recipients of research funding from the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation, Brown worked to preserve research funding by cosponsoring and reauthorizing programs to provide continued federal funding to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics. America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-358).
SUMMER JOBS PLAN: In addition to hosting a summer jobs fair for students, Brown introduced legislation that would create summer jobs for young Americans by allowing states to establish or strengthen summer jobs programs. This legislation is based on President Obama’s American Jobs Act Pathways to Work Summer Jobs Initiative. Youth Summer Jobs Act of 2012 (S. 3273).
NEW VISAS FOR FOREIGN-BORN STUDENTS EARNING ADVANCED DEGREES: Brown cosponsored a bipartisan bill that would create new visas for entrepreneurs and foreign-born students that are earning advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In addition, this legislation would encourage investment in startup companies by creating tax breaks for such investments. STARTUP Act 2.0 (S. 3217).
