Local Aid
One of Senator Brown's foremost priorities while serving in the Senate has been to return the highest amount of local aid possible to each of the twelve towns he represents. Distributing funds to his towns to pay for education, emergency responders, maintaining infrastructure and managing capital investments is paramount for local communities and an increasingly challenge with such heavy reliance on property taxes.
► State Budget Increases – In the budget, each one of Senator Brown’s towns will receive an increase in local FY09aid.
► Securing State Grants – Senator Brown has secured a long list of grants for local projects in his district, from funding to assist with arts, recycling and senior programming, to infrastructure grants to improve intersections and redevelopment of downtown areas.
► Lottery Revenue – Senator Brown has fought hard to get the Commonwealth to return millions of dollars in revenue from the State Lottery which is owed to his cities and towns. Following the economic uncertainty of 9/11, the legislature capped the amount of revenue towns could receive from lottery ticket sales. Sen. Brown believes the three years worth of money should be returned to the towns as promised. That is why Sen. Brown co-sponsored a resolution called the Massachusetts Municipal Finance Relief Act of 2007 to remove the past lottery funds from the $2 billion rainy day fund and send them in a one time payment to all 351 cities and towns in MA.
Sen. Brown’s district would receive the following:
